Obviously, the game’s 2001 presentation sensibilities aged about as well as a sandwich left out on the counter overnight. Playing Kingdom Hearts for the first time as a late-teen teetering on the edge of Adulthood and Childhood was a poignant experience. Many of my warmest childhood memories were watching slowly degrading tapes of Toy Story or Winnie the Pooh movies on the living room’s CRT. I was never a Disney kid but they were still a staple of my upbringing. Growing up during the late-1990’s and early-2000’s meant I had grown up watching many of the Disney movies featured prominently in the game.

Yet, the game’s wonderfully whimsical atmosphere eased my critical mind. Truthfully, the game was chunky and stiff and movement felt about as elegant as a rock tumbling down a gentle decline. During those past nine months I finished playing the first Kingdom Hearts title on my PlayStation 4. The Darkness licked at the edges of my reason and my way was nearly lost. The majority of those nine months I spent occupying the darkest corners of my young adult brain.

The previous nine months made up the tail end of the worst year of my life. The first time I tried to play Kingdom Hearts 2 was during the summer after my second year of university. That is when I really started to fall in love with games. I emulated Persona 3 Portable and Mario Kart Double Dash, in the process gaining a newfound appreciation for older games. I became interested in Persona 5 which came out that year. Though through my waning interest in open-world role playing games, wading through multiplayer toxicity and failing to become as enraptured in MMORPG’s as I had hoped, I began to look towards single player games. The only game I had really gone out of my way to play for the story was Bioshock Infinite– the others were sandboxes. I spent most of my time queued up in multiplayer lobbies for popular class-based shooters of the era or sinking countless hours into heavily-modded Bethesda games. You see, not a few weeks prior I was a hardcore PC game enjoyer. Only an hour or less into the game I decided to return back after I got the high definition versions of the game for my dust-covered PlayStation 4 at home. PCSX2 seemed to handle Kingdom Hearts decently enough until the first cut scene, where the performance would tank into the single-digit frame rates during any scene where hair or water were featured. At the time I was running the PCSX2 emulator on my Lenovo X220 ThinkPad which had woefully underperformed even in my playing of Half-Life 2 and Portal 2 a few weeks before then. A “simple and clean” introduction before the game even started.

The menu screen alone was enough to send chills down the spine- only to be surpassed by its sequel- never again matched in pure elegance and whimsy a feeling perfectly reflective of the game within. Though it was Kingdom Hearts that really threatened to exceed itself as simple a game, and become something more significant. Without their recommendations I would never have tried Shadow of the Colossus or Persona 3– two games which have since become extremely important in my formative years as a late-blooming video game enjoyer. Many of those games were the first single-player story-driven experiences I had grown to enjoy after seeking solace from the pits of depravity of online multiplayer games. They were an enthusiast of the console and had eagerly recommended me many games over the months I knew them. A friend I no longer talk to once recommended me Kingdom Hearts on the basis that I wanted to get into the PlayStation 2’s game library.
